What We Do
The IRS offers free basic tax return preparation to people who qualify through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) programs. People qualify if they earn $60,000 or less or if they are 60+ years of age. The programs also serve taxpayers with disabilities or limited English.
The KC Metro Tax Coalition does taxes year round, but the busiest time is during the tax season (January – April). We are looking for adult volunteers who can greet taxpayers, answer questions, collect/organize paperwork, prepare taxes, or help to operate the tax site (scheduling, set up, closing).
Volunteers must complete role based training and certification before they begin working with taxpayers. The IRS can offer continuing education credits to certain professionals who complete the training: Enrolled Agents (EAs), non-credentialed tax return preparers (AFSP), and Certified Financial Planners (CFP).
Join the KC Metro Tax Coalition group and become a member to see more information about training and specific opportunities. We look forward to working with you! Please contact us at kcvita@missouri.edu with any questions.
